Karate Uniform, Karate Gear: What Does Your Karate Kid Need For Her First Class?

So you got your kid enrolled in your local martial arts school, congratulations! This is the first step to a rewarding journey for both you and her. You probably have a few worries about what lies ahead but at the same time you’re probably really excited to see your child get into the martial arts. So what equipment, uniform and gear do you need to buy for the first class — and how much should it cost?

One of the great things about the martial arts is that it doesn’t cost much to get started compared to other activities. For example a set of good golf clubs can cost as much as $1000 or more. Starting soccer can lead to multiple purchases of a soccer shirt and shorts, socks and cleats, shin pads and of course a good soccer ball. Baseball and football have similar requirements. Dance and ballet can also become quite expensive with all of the different costumes and outfits for the various recitals. You want your child to look good of course so you’re willing to buy whatever is necessary. But you don’t know much about karate.

Initially for martial arts training you only need a uniform (often called a gi) and that’s it. Of course there are other things you could buy such as a gear bag or a club T-shirt but essentially your only piece of equipment to get started is a uniform. A basic uniform should cost around $30 to $40 and sometimes, depending on the school, your first uniform is given to you FREE as a bonus for signing up for the initial program.
“OK, this sounds good. All I need is a uniform for $30 and I might even get it for free. This is a great deal, what am I missing here? What lies ahead that will affect my pocketbook?”

Well, you’re right to be a little skeptical but honestly you don’t need much money for karate equipment. Your biggest ongoing expense will be the cost of your tuition which is currently (as of January 2008) at an average of around $100 to $120 per month for a twice a week program. Community center programs are obviously cheaper and large schools that are located on busy streets in nice areas are obviously higher because they have to be to keep their doors open.

Concerning the equipment, these are the items that you will need to purchase as your child progresses through the ranks to black belt:

· Better quality uniforms (these can range from $60 for a mid-level uniform, to $100 for a good uniform, and all the way up to $200 for a top of the line uniform – your instructor should offer a good selection to fit the different budgets)

· Sparring gear – your child will need hand pads and shin & instep pads, and in all probability a gum shield and some headgear. All of this should cost you $100 or less depending on the quality of gear you buy. Often your instructor will offer the whole package for a discount and you should definitely take advantage of this to save a bit of money.

· Training gear – Martial arts requires a lot of practice and your child will probably need to practice at home as well as in class. To facilitate this you may need to buy some focus targets or a kick bag (either a hanging bag or a free-standing bag). These targets usually begin at around $20 for the basics, and a good kick bag will cost a little over $100. However be warned you could easily spend up to $500 on this type of equipment depending on how much your budget is, because there are all kinds of really cool training gear available.

· Weapons – Depending on your school, there may be a weapons requirement and again this will be an additional expense. Basic weapons don’t cost very much however and you probably won’t have to put out any more than about $20 per weapon just to be able to participate in the class. As usual of course there are multiple upgrade options and if your child wants to enter into tournaments then a better quality weapon will be required.

· Instructional support resources – Many schools offer books and DVDs for curriculum support and although these items are yet another expense they are a one-time investment that can be tremendously beneficial to your child’s ultimate progress and development. These tools will help your child practice at home and can also provide you, as the parent, with the means to offer support and help to your child as she progresses through the ranks. The cost of these resources will vary based on the different curriculum that is being studied but very often there are some excellent resources to be found online, on your club website or on other style specific websites. Be sure to do your research in addition to purchasing the necessary content support.

All in all the gear, equipment and uniform cost of practicing martial arts is minimal because in most cases all you need for the first couple of years is a uniform (or two), some sparring gear, some basic training gear for practice at home, an occasional weapon, and some instructional DVDs or books to take your child’s understanding to the next level. The estimated cost of all of this equipment is about $400 to $500 over a period of two years to fulfill the minimum requirements. If you break this down on a per month basis then you are looking at less than $20 per month on average for basic equipment costs for the first few of years of training.

The truth of the matter is that like every good parent you will probably spend more because you will want to buy your child some T-shirts and clothing, a gear bag, additional equipment and so on. But these things will still be considerably less than that set of golf clubs! And what’s more, you can use these items as valuable incentives for your child as they successfully make it through the ranks of their training.

Turbo Jam Vs. ChaLEAN Extreme

Chalene Johnsons’ newest offering to the world of at home fitness videos is ChaLEAN Extreme, published by Beachbody. Made famous by the Turbo series of workouts, this new program is as different from Turbo Jam as Turbo Jam was new and revolutionary.

Turbo Jam is primarily a cardio workout. Filled with fun movements and great music, Chalene keeps things moving in a fast paced cardio workout that has an emphasis on sculpting and core training. Her less intense persona is great for those who perhaps are just beginners, and who don’t want to feel like some television fitness guru is yelling at them to do more and do it harder.

In addition, Turbo Jam has plenty of cardio options and is a flexible program that is easily modified for any level of fitness.

On the other hand, the movements are all fairly similar and can easily lead to boredom. That the choreography is fairly simple and easy to learn is both a boon and a detriment as it can also add to boredom if you’re not constantly challenged to master the movements.

In comparison, ChaLEAN Extreme focuses more on strength training and sculpting through resistance training. Using a tried and true technique of low repetitions with heavier weights, Chalene guides you through a rotation that includes an interval workout as well as a cardio workout.

The workouts are great for those pressed for time – they are short and effective. Chalene is motivating and makes the workouts fun while constantly pushing you to maximize your movements in order to achieve greater results. The ChaLEAN Extreme program is more of a total body workout, as no muscle group is left out of the workout rotation.

ChaLEAN Extreme is definitely a more intense workout which encompasses a multi-month schedule so more of a commitment is required. Unlike Turbo Jam, it is very likely that the user will need to purchase additional or at least heavier, weights. It is a less flexible program and may pose more of a challenge to the beginner.

Chalene includes a variety of innovative movements and exercises that are designed to keep you challenged and more importantly, keep working those muscles in order to burn more fat.

Turbo Jam and ChaLEAN Extreme are both quality offerings from Beachbody, and either one of them is great for the perhaps less intense individual who is interested in working out and getting in shape but isn’t quite ready for some of the high intensity programs also offered by Beachbody.

Of the three common alternatives for providing access between floors (residential elevators, stair lifts or stair lifts, and platform lifts) the stair lift is by far the least expensive option.

Straight stair lifts range in price from 2.5k – 4k, and between 4k – 15k for retrofitted curved models. As the complexity of the stair design increases so will the installation costs. Curved rail lifts require a highly detailed on-site survey prior to order and can take up to 3 months to be built and delivered.

Drive Type – There are 4 types of Stair lift drives that are available for consumer purchase.

• Cable – Most cable drive systems use a strong steel cable, the kind used in elevators, to advance the passenger. Some have said that cable drive stair lifts don’t have smooth starts and stops but it really depends on the model.
• Chain – Usually only used for heavy duty models. Can be loud at times.
• Screw – The lifting mechanism used is a screw driven actuator, which is powered by a rechargeable battery.
• Rack & Pinion – Users ride is smooth and controlled. Speed can be set by installer. Rack and pinion (meaning gear and teeth). The systems must be cleaned and lubricated regularly to prevent damage to the components. Gear teeth can be hazardous, especially to children, but most models have hidden gears.

Many manufacturers have discontinued their cable, chain, and screw drive systems, with the exception of their heavy duty models. Rack & pinion are the one’s mostly used today. However, Drum and Cable systems are amazing too!

Rail / Track – The track used with a stair lift is secured to the stairs. Steel and aluminum are the primary metals used in manufacturing the tracks. Steel is often used for custom engineered applications, where as Aluminum is typically found in straight applications because of its lighter weight and interchangeability.

Power – Most Stair lifts today are powered by batteries or a domestic mains supply. Either AC (mains supply) or DC powered (battery). AC powered units use a trailing mains cable that is said to be less reliable than the DC battery powered units. Furthermore, the trailing cable needs to be reeled out and reeled back in, each and every time the stair lift travels up and down the stairway. AC powered units can be recharged anywhere along the track, whereas DC powered units can only be recharged at the base stations at the top and bottom of the stairs. There are several states where they prohibit the installation of AC powered equipment unless you are a fully qualified electrician.

There are two types of Station Charging: 

• Static Charging – consists of permanent charging stations positioned at each end of the rail.
• Flexible Charging – allows the charging stations to be moved anywhere on the rail.

Swivel Seat – To safely access the upper landing of the stairs, one must swivel the stair lift seat onto the landing. A lock release lever allows the seat to turn. Some seats have a single or dual release arms. 

There are two types of swivel seats: 

• 90° Swivel Seat – This type of swivel seat is mounted on the upstairs side of the chassis and fold in one direction.
• 180° Swivel Seat – This model folds in both directions.

Diagnostics – Many newer stair lifts offer a self diagnostic system that can help diagnose problems with your lift and decrease maintenance costs.

Accessories – There are a number of accessories available to complement your Stair Lift. These accessories are great for individuals with additional mobility difficulties and/or more complex stair configurations.

• Sit and Stand Frame – Allows the passenger to choose between sitting and standing.
• Seatbelts – Great safety feature with offered in either belt or shoulder strap.
• Hinged Rail – Allows the railing to be moved from the bottom of the stairs.
• Bridging Platform – Used for curved staircases at the top of the landing.
• Power Folding Footrest – For individuals that have a hard time bending down.
• Power Swivel Seat – Automatically turns the seat for effortless entry and exit.

Installation – Many stair lifts are manufactured so they can be easily installed. Some individuals decide to install it themselves while others prefer to have them installed by the manufacturer. Most stair lift manufacturers will have measurement and installation guides readily available on their websites and are very helpful if you have any questions.

How can i get bulked up with only a bench press and basketball hoop?

I’m 17 and i am trying to get ripped, and i have seen a little improvement, but not that much.

What are some excersises i should do. Here’s what i do now:
Bench press
normal pushups
pull ups/curl ups
sit ups

My bench press also has a bar that you pull, which is attached to a pully and you can pull weights up, but that just hurts my wrists.

Hey man you dont need much of anything. Watch this video of this guy! its ridiculous. It proves you can do plenty of stuff with just your body weight…not machines required. The other website is a great way to get great at push ups. If you think you’re good at push ups google the aztec push up. Now that is crazy.Running is a great tool to get in shape. You burn lots of calories while building muscle.
Squats, lunges, jumps- for speed, depth, height, wall sits, sit ups…just keep working. Good luck
