Is it ok to start doing dead-lifts at the age of 16?
Hey i’m 16 and i was wondering if i can start doing dead lift exercise for my back. I heard that it can cause damage if you start doing it when you’re too young. Can anyone help me out?
Dead lifts are safe as long as you maintain a flat or slightly arched back. If you get too fatigued to maintain this good form, put the bar down. (A rounded back with heavy weights can put damaging stress on the spine, but this is easy to avoid with good form.)
Also, don’t jerk the bar off the floor. You may have seen some people move their body first, to jerk at the bar, to use momentum to help lift the weight. That can strain the back muscles.
You can raise the bar quickly, but pull smoothly. Keep your arms straight. Your body and bar move together.
Give you body some time to get accustomed to this exercise. I recommend that you start very light and add 10 lbs a week or so until it get challenging.
I was doing deads at your age and I’m now 51 with no back problems.
